The Group's aim is "...to encourage through participation and consultation a sensitive and sustainable environment for the communities of Royston and Carlton".

The Group have already had a number of successes to date, notably the improvements to the centre of the village transforming The Wells into a now vibrant and welcoming centre of the village. Also, the High School's playground has been resurfaced, enabling seating, planting and environmental improvements to be made. And the Park entrance has been regenerated, with the erection of a pedestrian entrance and an enlargement of the car park, together with the widespread planting of plants and shrubs.

The Environment sub-group was formed on 27 September 1996.
Its partners are Royston High School, BMBC Planning and Highways Departments, Groundwork Dearne Valley, British Trust for Conservation Volunteers, RJB Mining (Monckton Coke & Chemical Company), Barnsley Canal Group, Royston Angling Club, Athersley Angling Club, British Rail, South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, Wakefield MBC.
